Richard Schwamm, partner and attorney with Haliczer Pettis Schwamm (HPS) was appointed as the Orange County spokesperson for the 2011 Never Leave Your Child Alone (NLYCA) Hyperthermia Awareness program as part of a nationwide awareness campaign by Safe Kids USA.
The Safe Kids USA NLYCA program focuses on raising awareness and preventing unintentional injury to children inadvertently left in a car, bus or daycare transport van.
The statistics are shocking as to how many children in the U.S. have died as a result of this preventable act. Florida, in particular, has a high incident rate and is ranked second in the country for child deaths due to hyperthermia.
HPS encourages all parents and daycare personnel to take their time and look to see who is in the backseat before getting out of their cars or vans and to ensure that children are not unintentionally left behind. No child should suffer such a horrible death simply because the driver is too busy to pay attention to their most prized possession in the backseat.
